About Barsana

Barsana which is now a town in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh has a rich history steeped in Hindu tradition. It is said to be the place where Radha, spent most of her childhood. Barsana is a picturesque village where Radha would play with Krishna amidst the lush green valley.

Barsana holds a lot of importance to the devotees of Vasihnavisim as Radha was the daughter of Sri Vrishnubhanu and Mata Kirti. The followers of GaudiyaVaishnavisim worships Radha as they consider her to be the Goddess Shaki.

Located 20kms from Goverdhan, Barsana is also one of the most popular pilgrimage centres of the Hindus and followers of Vasihnavism and an important centre in Brahbhoomi. The place is surrounded by hills on all sides and has become an important tourist attraction over the years. Previously known as Brahmasarin, this place also depicts the four headed Brahma and the temple of Ladiji at the peak makes it more special.

While holi is a festival that is celebrated all over India, in Barsana and Nandgaon it is celebrated in a much different manner. The otherwise sleepy town, Barsana comes alive during Holi every March, Holi is celebrated as Lath Mar holi in this part of the country. As the name suggests, in this Holi people hit with sticks.

According to the legend, Krishna is said to have visited Barsana, home of Radha and playfully teasedRadha and her friends. The gopis took offense of Krishna’s behavior and decided to teach him a lesson. In rememberance of this revenge, every year the men of Nandgaon come to Barsana during Holi dressed as Krishna to take over the temple Shri Radhikaji only to be shooed away by the women of Barsana by bamboo sticks laden in oil. The men are unable to hit back and instead they splash colours on the women. The few unlucky ones who get caught have to dress in women’s clothes and dance in front of all the others. Though it might sound humiliating in modern times, but all is done in the right spirit. It is a great delight to watch all the fun and mirth associated. It is believed that Krishna also met with the same fate when he went to visit Radha in Barsana.

Located 124km south of Delhi and 58.9 km off Vrindavan, the maximum temperature during the summer months reaches around 45°C and winters can reach a low of 4°C. It also receives heavy rainfall during monsoon. The best time to visit Barsana is during October-March especially during Holi.

Ladliji Ka Mandir

On top of Bhanugarh, is the famous Shriji temple also known as Ladli Lal kiMandir. This deity was originally established 5000 years ago by Vajranabh which was discovered by a devotee of Lord Chaitanya, Narayan Bhatt Goswami. The temple is an exquisite example of beautiful architecture and domes encompassing the palace. Beautiful pictures and ceilings on the wall of the temple depicts the love between Shri ShriRadha and Krishna. The most important festival of is Radhashtami, the day when ShrimatiRadharani appeared. Kushal Bihari temple is one of the most opulent temples of brajbhoomi. It was built by Rajput king who was an ardent follower of Radha Krishna. The temple is intricately designed both outside and inside carved with sandstone. A wonderful idol of Shri Radha is kept at the centre of the temple complex. It signifies that Radha and Krishna should be the center point off all activities. Before the opening of the temple Radaha appeared in the King’s dreams and asked him to built the temple in the original place where she belonged and not in that temple. Therefore the king also built another temple for Radhaji at her place of origin and in Kushal Bihari temple one can see all the allies of Shri Radha in elegant posture.  Small rooms were built around temple by the king for his ministers and family. Kushal Bihari temple is a must visit for all tourists and devotees. It is believed that one must pray to RadhaKushal Bihari to please Lord Krishna so that when he is pleased all the desires will be fulfilled.

Maan Mandir is located on top of Maangarh. This is the place Radharani would go into seclusion whenenver she would be loving angry with Krishna. Here Krishna would plead and and weep to regain the love and favour of Radharani. There is a small tunnel within the temple which leads to a dark chamber that is believed to be the place where Radharani would go and sit whenever he would be angry with Krishna. Below the Maan mandir is Krishna Kund and Morr Kutir. While Krishna Kund is the place where Radhani would take a bath, Morr Kutir is the place where Krishna and Radha danced their way in the form of peacock and peahen.

Dan Bihari

As the name suggests, Dan- Bihari, Dan stands for donates and Bihari stands for Krishna, the temple has a famous story associated with donation. Once a poor Brahmin could not arrange the money for her daughter's mairrage and remember Krishna in grief. Shree Krishna arranged the gold equivalent to the weight of Radha and donated it to the poor Brahmin.

Sankari Khor

This is the place where Krishna and his sakhas would dress up as tax collectors and block the way of Radaharani and her sakhis and demand butter and yoghurt as tax for passing through Sankari Khor. Sankari Khor is just at the junction of Brahma and Vishnu Hill.

How to Reach Barsana


Barsana is situated on Delhi-Agra NH-2. There are various buses that run between Agra and Delhi.

By Rail: The nearest railway station to Barsana is Kosi Kalan at a distance of 10 kms. Mathura is about 50kms from Barsana

By Air: The nearest airport is Agra. However, the nearest international airport is New Delhi.
